About Bombela

The Bombela Concession Company is committed to implementing best-practice sustainability principles aimed at the achievement of balanced economic, social and environmental performance.

Economic Sustainability
Return on investment for its shareholders is a primary driver of Bombela's management focus. To this end sound financial and commercial controls are maintained and corporate governance standards maintained

Environmental Sustainability
Sound environmental management, transparent reporting and pro-active mitigation of impacts are cornerstones of Bombela's environmental practices.

All on-site activities are governed by an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) with regular inspections and audits conducted by trained environmental personnel.

During the development phase, environmental interventions included "search and rescue" exercises to find and relocate rare and endangered fauna and flora from the rail reserve; the installation of water treatment plants to pre-treat ground water pumped from the tunnels before release, re-cycling of rock removed from the tunnels, dust suppression and the cultivation of 5000 indigenous trees to replace the 2500 removed during construction

Environmental monitoring of aspects such as water quality, noise, energy consumption etc occurs on a regular basis and results are reported to the relevant environmental authorities and independent monitors.

Health and Safety
The imperative of sustaining a safe and healthy working environment is of paramount importance to Bombela. Our focus on safety is relentless and to this end dedicated safety officials are present within all entities of the organization.

Socio Economic Development
Integral to the early-stage planning of the project was a funadmental commitment that the Gautrain should significantly promote socio-economic development, black economic empowerment and skills development in the region. This was embedded in the Concession Agreement through multi-faceted criteria including minimum procurement hurdles from BEEs, new BEEs and SMMEs as well as Employment Equity hurdles benefiting HDIs, women and the disabled.

Gautrain created significant job opportunities and has stimulated business activities both directly and indirectly in the construction, manufacturing, services and communications industries.
